When I went home, my mother had one of these under the baby grand.
But, upon further examination and research, I found out it’s actually a work by Roxy Paine, an American artist. With this series of work, named Scumak, he examined how automation can influence art. Paine built his own machines and then put them to work creating these sculptures – of course each one is totally unique, though created through an automated process. Contrast that to any factory, where the goal of automation is full standardization.
You have to admit that there’s beauty in this, if not in the final sculpture, then in the idea behind it.
Paine also has another series of work that is quite stunning. More to come!
