Hermes’ Great Leap Forward

There’s been news this week that Chanel is considering expanding their e-commerce site to accessories and watches. There is obviously concern about maintaining the luxury atmosphere in the e-commerce medium, which is not easy.

Well, they should take a (web) page out of Hermes’ book. Not only is their site elegant, easy to use and whimsical, but they are also now selling some extremely expensive items on the site, including some of their most popular handbag styles. My favorite is the amazing Jypsiere for a jaw dropping $7,600 (I WANT!), but if you’re feeling a little less flush, you could also go for the everyday Victoria for only $4,500.

For a luxury consumer, does shopping online lessen the experience of buying such a treasure? I don’t think so, especially if there’s great customer service and still comes in that beautiful orange box. Plus you won’t have to deal with the sometimes obnoxious store people (Rue Faubourg, that’s you).

It’ll be interesting to see how they do with online sales and whether their competitors, like Chanel, will follow suit. In the meantime, excuse me while I daydream about my new bag.
